toby1966 Posted December 8, 2009 Report Posted December 8, 2009 I have just spent the last 2 days trying to find out why my car Mk1 2.3 1998 Galaxy keeps chewing up drive belts.I have gone through all the stages of putting it on the wrong way and then the right way and then realising that the a/c compressor seemed to be sticking and i duly greasesd it and refitted it and the belt and then 10 minutes driving and it chewed it up again. This i think is the problem so my my question is can i bypass the A/C?I know the belt would have to be shorter, but could this be done safely!A new one is at least 200+vat plus fitting soi any advice would be great. seatkid Posted December 8, 2009 Report Posted December 8, 2009 You could disconnect the electrical plug to the compressor to stop the compressor clutch from engaging - (I assume the compressor is seized which may be the case if you put the belt the wrong way round). Dont know what you greased - you probably greased the clutch! Not a good idea.... Alternatively, you could buy a belt for the version of your car which is not not fitted with a/c. In that case you need to remove or move the compressor out the way. Quote
